Mg sulfate
Indications/Uses
Acute hypomagnesemia accompanied by signs of tetany. Control of HTN, encephalopathy & convulsions. Prevention & control of convulsions in patients w/ preeclampsia or eclampsia. Prevention of hypomagnesemia in patients receiving TPN.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Mg deficiency Adult 2 mL IM every 6 hr for 4 doses. Nephritic seizures Childn 0.05-0.1 mL/kg IM. Preeclampsia 8-10 mL added into 250 mL of 5% dextrose 5% or 0.9% NaCl inj by IV infusion. Simultaneously, up to 20 mL IM of undiluted soln (10 mL each buttock). Thereafter, 8-10 mL into IM into alternate buttocks.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Impaired renal function & patients receiving digitalis glycosides.
Adverse Reactions
Flushing, sweating, hypotension, muscular weakness, sedation & confusion; decreased deep tendon reflexes; resp paralysis.
Drug Interactions
May enhance effects of neuromuscular blocking agents.
